Today, Wednesday, May 14, marks the seventh anniversary of the United States Supreme Court’s repeal of the federal ban on sports betting that had limited single-game wagering to Nevada. Since sports gambling went mainstream, the US commercial gaming industry has flourished, as sportsbooks and online wagering have brought a horde of new gamblers into the market.

In its 2025 “State of the States” report, the American Gaming Association (AGA) details that commercial gaming revenue, or all forms of legal nontribal gaming income aside from lottery gaming, climbed 7.5% from 2023 to a little more than $72 billion. State taxes on the unprecedented revenue were up 8.5% year over year to $15.9 billion, also an all-time high.

Propelled by another year of strong organic growth in existing online markets for both sports betting and iGaming, the commercial casino sector enjoyed a third consecutive record year,” said Bill Miller, president and CEO of the AGA. “The unprecedented success of our industry comes as more Americans than ever before have access to, and allocate their entertainment budgets to, the legal, regulated gaming market.”

The AGA estimates that more than half of American adults in the US participated in some form of legal gambling last year, and 45% patronized a physical gaming property.

Sports Betting, Online Casino Expansion

The majority of the US public now resides within an hour’s drive of a casino or gaming facility. And while iGaming, or online casinos, are legal in only seven states — Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia — more than half of the states (34) allow people to bet lawfully on sports via their computers and mobile devices.

While brick-and-mortar casino revenue has grown minimally in recent years, gross gaming revenue (GGR) from online sports betting and iGaming has surged, and most heaved the commercial gaming industry to new highs.

While land-based casino revenue from the country’s 492 locations, including racinos, climbed only 1% from 2023 to $49.9 billion, GGR from iGaming rose 29% to $8.4 billion. Oddsmakers kept almost $13.8 billion of players’ bets, a 25% hike from 2023.

More Gaming, More Embrace

Gambling is more prevalent than ever. Recent studies suggest that about nine in 10 US adults see advertisements for gambling products at least once a week.

The expansion of gambling, led by sports betting but has also involved new states legalizing commercial brick-and-mortar casinos, including Arkansas, Nebraska, and Virginia, with New York City soon on the way, has made gambling a more tolerable form of entertainment in the public’s eyes. Once reserved to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and the sleazy or sinful connotations that went along with the destinations, gambling is more popular and seemingly more acceptable than ever.

“Americans increasingly see gaming in a positive light, recognizing our commitment to operating responsibly and the economic benefits we bring to local communities. These positive views are the foundation of our industry’s credibility with the public, regulators, and lawmakers,” said Miller.
