Welsh e-communities project closes

Further evidence that UK governments are losing enthusiasm for comprehensive programmes to support community-based technology projects comes with news that the Welsh Assembly Government is closing the £16.5 million e-communities project. This is still promoted as a key part of the Wales Information Society initiative on the Welsh Development Agency site.
The regeneration magazine New Start quotes a Welsh Assembly spokesperson as saying that they will now rely on a 'targeted system' that will 'directly support individual, local ICT projects in making bids for structural funds.
"We expect to see far more effective community regeneration by concentrating our efforts on sustainable, local projects which feed in to our overall aims for ICT development in Wales, rather than through a single large project."
